Derived from the pencil sketch of the Medway at Upnor on ff.87v and 88r of the 'Medway' sketchbook, T.B.CXCIX. A more detailed study of the Castle itself, from a slightly different angle, is on f.23v of the same book. The watercolour was lent to the 1833 exhibition by Thomas Griffith.
