A progress proof in the British Museum (1894-226-103) bears a note by Turner instructing the engraver to alter his work on the foreground: 'Too much of stones all too equal as to size and work - They should be smaller and smaller from the front and less defined'; the relevant area in the print itself is marked 'Lighter'.
