437 - Sunset at Sea with two Gurnets

Perhaps related to the two sea studies in bodycolour on buff paper in the Bacon collection (Nos.438 and 439). There may also be a connection with the two studies of fish exhibited by Ruskin in 1878 (Nos. 108-9) with a note associating them with the 'Slaver' - i.e. 'Slavers throwing overboard the Dead and Dying' (No.518) shown at the R.A. in 1840. One of these studies (No. B125) is of a Gurnard (an alternative spelling of Gurnet); a similar drawing is in the Fogg Art Museum.
