The book contains drawings of Virginia Water, Kenilworth, Dudley, Tamworth, Lichfield, etc., made on a tour of the Midlands on which Turner collected material for the England and Wales watercolours. The view of the High Street, Oxford (f.Iv) was used by Turner as the starting point for a series of 'colourbeginnings', experiments in broad effects of light; see Nos.443-447.
