The book was used on Turner's journey to Scotland where he toured in July to September 1831, collecting material for Cadell's edition of Scott's Poetical Works of 1834 and Scott's Prose Works of 1834-6. The sketches begin at Birkenhead, with views of Liverpool (ff. 1-7); then Turner seems to have travelled via Preston, Kendal and the Lakes to Carlisle, thence to the Border. ff.14-18 have a series of drawings made in or near Kendal.
