455 - ‘Colour Studies’ Sketchbook No.1 - Two Figures watching a Sleeping Woman - A Couple on a Bed

The watercolour landscape sketches on ff.51v, 52v are similar to Turner's studies for vignettes to Campbell's Poems on which he was engaged in about 1835 (see Nos. 295-298).

The sketchbook contains a series of studies of nude figures, singly or in couples, in a bedroom. It has been associated with Turner's various visits to Petworth about 1830, and the series of bodycolour studies made there (Nos.343-362); but these bedroom scenes are presumably imaginary. Another small sketchbook, T.B.CCXCI(c), contains one watercolour sketch similar to the Petworth interiors (f.1), but it appears to be the first of a series of studies narrating an erotic adventure (ff.1-12v). There are further colour studies on similar themes throughout the book. Whether these drawings were made at Petworth or not, their preoccupation with the chiaroscuro of interiors chimes in with Turner's revived interest in Rembrandt during the early 1830s (see Nos.331-2, 338).
