576 - ‘Dresden and Berlin’ Sketchbook - Studies of Paintings in the Royal Gallery, Dresden

Called simply 'Dresden' by Finberg, this sketchbook is renamed 'Dresden and Berlin' here to distinguish it from the 'Dresden' sketchbook, T.B.CCCI. The first two leaves are taken up with German phrases and their translations; it seems likely that this book was in use at the same time as Turner's other Dresden sketchbook (No.575), which also contains German phrases. Both books seem to belong to the 1833 tour which took Turner from Berlin to Vienna and on to Venice. ff. 20-3I seem to have been used in Berlin.

Ff.6r-7v contain rough pencil sketches of the paintings in the Dresden Gallery, including Raphael's 'Sistine Madonna', Correggio's 'Mary Magdalen reading' and Aert van Gelder's 'Presentation of Christ'. The exhibited pages show studies after Correggio's 'Madonna of St George', 'Madonna of St Francis' and 'Madonna of St Sebastian', with a sketch of a 'Fễte Champêtre' by Watteau. There is also a thumbnail sketch of a street in Dresden.
