Bachrach dates this sketchbook and the 'Rotterdam and Rhine' sketchbook (T.B.CCCXXII) to Autumn 1841, presumably following Finberg's suggestion (1961, p.384) that Turner was then in Holland. Finberg (1909, II, PP. 1033-5) gives a general date of 1837-41 for these books. Holland was frequently the starting and finishing-point for Turner's numerous Continental tours during this period. The 'Rotterdam to Venice' sketchbook (T.B.CCCXX) must have been in use in 1840, the only year after 1833 in which Turner seems to have visited Venice. The sketch of Rotterdam with the churches of St. Dominicus (built about 1836 according to Bachrach) and St. Lawrence on f.2r of that book seems to belong to the same visit as do those of similar views in the 'Rotterdam' sketchbook, ff.1v, 2v and it may be, therefore, that this book belongs to the same year as the last Venetian journey, i.e. 1840.
