Although very different in colouring this view may be the same as that in the Fitzwilliam drawing (No.1612) known as 'Monte Rosa from the Val d'Aosta'. Another drawing called 'Monte Rosa' is at Edinburgh (Vaughan Bequest, 887) but the identification of the mountain has been questioned. This drawing may be one of those which resulted from Turner's tour of the Alps in 1836 with H. A. J. Munro of Novar.
