The economical style of this drawing, which relies on a combination of very broad, delicately coloured washes and work with a pen dipped in red colour, is typical of a large group of views made in roll sketchbooks (soft covered books which could be rolled up; see No.618) along the Rhine and the Neckar and in Switzerland in about 1840-1. Many of the Venetian subjects (see e.g. Nos.553, 554) use the same technique, but in these drawings Turner is conspicuously reticent in his almost monochrome. use of colour, very often creating effects which are almost monochrome.
