The second of the set of ten Swiss views made for Griffith in 1842, of which Ruskin said 'Turner had never made any drawings like these before, and never made any like them again'; the 'Red Rigi' (No.603) was the third. The 'specimen' drawing from which this watercolour was developed is No.599. The 'Blue Rigi' was bought by Elhanan Bicknell of Herne Hill.
