17. The Great Swiss Watercolours 1840-46
604 - Splügen | |

|
'Splügen' was No.I in Ruskin's list of the ten Swiss watercolours of 1842; it was bought by Munro and is now in a private collection in America (repr. Agnew, Turner, 1967, No.86). This drawing is a fully workedout watercolour in its own right, and served as the basis for Munro's version of the subject, in which the scale of the rock on the left is considerably enlarged. Another view up the valley towards Splügen is T.B. CCCXXXVI-II, but it has neither the tower on the rock nor the straight road which are characteristic of this design. The drawings of Splügen in the 'Como and Splügen' sketchbook (T.B.CCCXXXVIII, inside cover and f.i6) are even further removed from the present watercolour.
