17. The Great Swiss Watercolours 1840-46
607 - Lucerne from the Walls

Listed by Ruskin as No.6 of the ten Swiss views made in 1842, and the first that he himself bought. It was the drawing he sold to the dealer Vokins for £ 1,000 as 'I wished to get dead Turner, for one drawing, his own original price for the whole ten, and thus did'. The preparatory watercolour of the subject is in the Turner Bequest, CCCLXIV -290. Several rough pencil sketches of parts of Lucerne and its walls are in the 'Lucerne and Berne' sketchbook, T.B.CCCxXVIII-3v, 4, etc.
