17. The Great Swiss Watercolours 1840-46
614 - The Pass of St. Gothard; the First Bridge above Altdorf

According to Finberg, this drawing was the basis for a watercolour executed for Ruskin in 1845. The Inventory records 'a name (?John Ruskin) which has since been rubbed out' on the back of the drawing. In addition to the watercolour of 1843 (No.612), Ruskin owned several late views of the St. Gothard; he gave three to the University of Cambridge in 1861 ( their Nos. 586 587, 588) but these were all roll-sketchbook leaves like the present drawing.
