624 - River Landscape with Hills behind

Similar in style to other late, thinly painted 'unfinished' oils from the Turner Bequest and elsewhere. Unlike many of this group it is not, however, based on a Liber Studiorum design, but Michael Kitson suggests that, like the Louvre and Port Sunlight pictures (Nos.620 and 621) it shows a view generalised from some place in the British Isles ('Nouvelles Précisions sur le "Paysage" de Turner du Musée du Louvre' in La Revue du Louvre XXI, 1971, pp.89-93). The painting was probably bought by Robert Durning Holt in the late 1870s but its earlier history is unknown (see Kitson ibid, p.90).
