Carruga was a large sculpture/chariot (400 cm x 250 cm x 600 cm) that originally served as a stage for a performance by Club Moral. Like many other terms in medieval Latin, the term Carruca (or Carruga) took on a new and different meaning in the Middle Ages than its original classical meaning. There is no confusion about the meaning of carruca in Roman historical and literary sources: it clearly means a four-wheeled cart or carriage. The Carruga was first exhibited in the Nieuwe Workshop in Brussels in 1983, on the occasion of an exhibition by Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven: “Hoeren en Profeten” (Whores and Prophets). For the 1985 AutomoBiennale at the Middelheim Museum, a large iron cage with bars was built, enclosing a heavy DEUTZ truck engine. ‘Son of Carruga’ has been shown with various things locked inside, mostly electric motors. ‘Son of Carruga’ was used for the performance ‘La Chute des Anges Rebelles’ on 22 September 1984: “In an abandoned house, I lay in a room, half wrapped in a blanket, tied up and with my head in a metal cage. On the wall hung a work by AMVK about a kidnapped Italian boy”. Metal, 33cm x 33cm x 33cm. Property of the artist. | ||
