With Fantastic Voyage through the Body of an Artist, KIOSK presents an exhibition by one of the most idiosyncratic Belgian artists: Danny Devos, aka DDV.
DDV's oeuvre is characterized by his perseverance and versatility. Over the past forty-five years he has given 174 performances, had twenty-nine solo exhibitions, and participated in 123 group exhibitions around the world, as well as appearing not only as a subject but also as a character in various publications. Now KIOSK brings a selection of historical works and shows his most recent body of work for the first time.
Fantastic Voyage through the Body of an Artist cannot simply be read as a retrospective or an overview exhibition. The human body is the common thread: that of the artist using his body as an instrument for his art, but also that of the viewer who is mentally and physically stimulated and challenged by the artworks.
Until Devos got seriously injured in a bicycle accident on July 13, 2013, he used his own body to realize confrontational performances, with or without the presence of spectators. While he has rarely documented his performances in the past, for several years now he has been making models of some of his most evocative actions and installations. These 'bonsai' sculptures, made with new semi-digital techniques such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC milling, represent an unprecedented approach to documenting/reconstructing performance art. These works have not been exhibited before.
Devos has also been conducting in-depth research into the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence by using AI text-to-image machine learning models to generate new images by entering text. Sometimes the text is simply his name, “danny devos,” sometimes it's complex phrases that refer to historical or current events. He then translates the AI-generated images thus obtained into sculptural objects using advanced 3D technologies.
On the occasion of the exhibition at KIOSK, Devos used various AI text-to-image generators to create twenty-three posters, as absurd as they are colorful, of fictive ‘posters for an exhibition by AI artist Danny Devos’ in famous contemporary art centers and museums (Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, MoMA, etc.). Two thousand copies of those posters have been disseminated around the walls of Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam.
This interest in technological developments can be read as a new chapter in the existential search for the individual’s human condition by a child of the “no-future generation”—within the context of a society that is developing systems that determine its future faster than ever.
In Fantastic Voyage through the Body of an Artist Devos resolutely does not use exhibition props, pedestals, or walls. He places his works on furniture that he could find on or around the academy campus, including the KIOSK information desk. The exhibition is accompanied by a six-hour original soundtrack (to be listened to in the exhibition space or online during KIOSK opening hours from 12 noon to 6 pm) created by two visual art students from KASK and LUCA: Zeger Vetters and Jakke Jalink. They delved into more than forty years of collected audio material from DDV and Club Moral, creating a sound work of selected recordings and releases layered with their own music.
On the last day of the exhibition, June 9, 2024, KIOSK invites everyone who has ever witnessed a DDV performance to come and share memories. This open call aims to bring together as many people as possible and thus keep the historical memory of DDV's extensive performance work alive.

Met Fantastic Voyage through the Body of an Artist presenteert KIOSK een tentoonstelling van een van de meest eigenzinnige Belgische kunstenaars: Danny Devos, alias DDV.
DDV's oeuvre wordt gekenmerkt door zijn doorzettingsvermogen en veelzijdigheid. De voorbije vijfenveertig jaar gaf hij 174 performances, had hij negenentwintig solotentoonstellingen, nam hij deel aan 123 groepstentoonstellingen over de hele wereld, en verscheen hij niet alleen als onderwerp maar ook als personage in verschillende publicaties. Nu brengt KIOSK een selectie historische werken en wordt zijn meest recente werk voor het eerst getoond.
Fantastic Voyage through the Body of an Artist kan niet zomaar gelezen worden als een retrospectieve of een overzichtstentoonstelling. Het menselijk lichaam vormt de rode draad: dat van de kunstenaar die zijn lichaam gebruikt als instrument voor zijn kunst, maar ook dat van de toeschouwer die mentaal en fysiek geprikkeld en uitgedaagd wordt door de kunstwerken.
Tot Devos op 13 juli 2013 ernstig gewond raakte bij een fietsongeluk, gebruikte hij zijn eigen lichaam om confronterende performances te realiseren, al dan niet in aanwezigheid van toeschouwers. Hoewel hij zijn performances in het verleden zelden documenteerde, maakt hij sinds enkele jaren modellen van enkele van zijn meest suggestieve acties en installaties. Deze "bonsai" sculpturen, gemaakt met nieuwe semi-digitale technieken zoals 3D printen, lasersnijden en CNC frezen, vertegenwoordigen een ongekende benadering van het documenteren/herconstrueren van performance kunst. Deze werken zijn nooit eerder tentoongesteld.
Devos heeft ook diepgaand onderzoek gedaan naar de mogelijkheden en beperkingen van artificiële intelligentie door AI text-to-image machine learning modellen te gebruiken om nieuwe beelden te genereren door tekst in te voeren. Soms is de tekst gewoon zijn naam, "danny devos", soms zijn het complexe zinnen die verwijzen naar historische of actuele gebeurtenissen. Vervolgens vertaalt hij de aldus door AI gegenereerde beelden in sculpturale objecten met behulp van geavanceerde 3D-technologieën.
Ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling in KIOSK gebruikte Devos verschillende AI-tekst-naar-beeldgeneratoren om drieëntwintig even absurde als kleurrijke fictieve posters voor een "tentoonstelling van AI-kunstenaar Danny Devos" te maken in bekende hedendaagse kunstencentra en musea (Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, MoMA, enz.). Tweeduizend exemplaren van die posters werden aangeplakt op muren in Brussel, Gent, Antwerpen, Rotterdam en Amsterdam.
Deze interesse in technologische ontwikkelingen kan gelezen worden als een nieuw hoofdstuk in de existentiële zoektocht naar de menselijke conditie van het individu door een kind van de "no-future generation" - binnen de context van een maatschappij die sneller dan ooit systemen ontwikkelt die haar toekomst bepalen.
In Fantastic Voyage through the Body of an Artist maakt Devos resoluut geen gebruik van tentoonstellingsobjecten, sokkels of wanden. Hij plaatst zijn werken op meubilair dat hij op of rond de academiecampus kon vinden, waaronder de informatiebalie van KIOSK. De tentoonstelling wordt begeleid door een zes uur durende originele soundtrack (te beluisteren in de tentoonstellingsruimte of online tijdens de openingstijden van KIOSK van 12.00 tot 18.00 uur), gemaakt door twee beeldende kunstenaars van KASK en LUCA: Zeger Vetters en Jakke Jalink. Ze doken in meer dan veertig jaar verzameld audiomateriaal van DDV en Club Moral en creëerden een geluidswerk van geselecteerde opnames en releases gelaagd met hun eigen muziek.
Op de laatste dag van de tentoonstelling, 9 juni 2024, nodigt KIOSK iedereen die ooit getuige is geweest van een DDV-performance uit om herinneringen te komen delen. Deze open oproep is bedoeld om zoveel mogelijk mensen samen te brengen en zo de historische herinnering aan DDV's uitgebreide performancewerk levend te houden.
Fantastic Voyage is a 1966 American science fiction adventure film directed by Richard Fleischer and written by Harry Kleiner, based on a story by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby. The film is about a submarine crew who is shrunk to microscopic size and venture into the body of an injured scientist to repair damage to his brain.
The exhibition can be seen during buildup -by appointment- from 2 April 2024 onwards and will officially open on Saturday 13 April 2024 from 3 pm - 6 pm.
